George Benjamin

(b. London, 31 Jan 1960),

English composer and pianist. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Messiaen and at Cambridge with Goehr: Ligeti and Boulez have been other influences. He first came to attention with the vividly imagined orchestral piece Ringed by the Flat Horizon (1980); this was consolidated with A Mind of Winter (1981) for soprano and small orchestra and At First Light for chamber ensemble (1982).
